Flashback: 1967: Club Cola – an East German Soft Drink

Club Cola has a striking logo and is one of the few East German products to survive the collapse of communism. After communist East Germany built the Berlin Wall in 1961, its citizens still yearned for western-style products. To appease them, the communist party decided to develop a cola of its own along the lines of Coke and Pepsi. on The first bottles of Club Cola came off the line on April 19, 1967. It wasn’t quite as sweet as the American version, it had a hint of lemon - and it suited the taste of East Germans. After the end of communism, it vanished from store shelves for several years, but in 1992 it was back - and continues to sell to this day. Sales figures may not pose a threat to the cola giants, but Club Cola has carved out and uccessfully defended its own niche as flavor of the East!
