The legacy of portrait photographer Richard Avedon
More than 250 stunning photographs taken by the unique artist demonstrate the scope of Richard Avedon’s work.
Photographic exhibitions in art-museums are not unusual these days. Indeed this month a number of European cities are hosting major photographic exhibitions.
But photography only really began as an artistic medium in the mid-70’s. Richard Avedon contributed significantly to this through his work, his memorable appearances on talk-shows and his public lectures. Now, four years after his death at the age of 81, a retrospective exhibition of the American photographer’s universally acclaimed work can be seen in Germany for the first time.
Throughout his life, Richard Avedon never stopped trying to improve his work. In Berlin’s `Martin Gropius-Bau´, more than 250 stunning photographs taken by the unique artist demonstrate the scope of Richard Avedon’s production over almost 60 years: from fashion-photography for magazines Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue to celebrity portraits and his shots of ordinary people taken while working as a staff-reporter for The New Yorker weekly magazine.
