Exploring music through the centuries - Herne’s Early Music Days
Today we take you to the heart of Germany's rust belt, the Ruhr District: home of coal mining, heavy industry in decline - and a world-class arts scene.
For over three decades, the Early Music Days in Herne have enjoyed a cult following as well as strong support from one of Germany's public broadcasters: West German Radio. So on bleak November days, amidst the smokestacks in a part of the country that is anything but touristy, you'll find expensive authentic music instruments in the Herne Arts Center, a music historical symposium and five days of world-class concerts. This year's theme was "For me, for you, for everybody," and it explored the various kinds of music making down through the centuries as individual or collective experiences.
