Spain - Villagers Drive out Roma
Castellar is a village in the district of Jaén, in southern Spain and home to some 100 Roma. Following fights between youths, villagers took to the streets, demanding the expulsion of the Roma and claiming they were responsible for increasing crime. The Roma fled after their homes were attacked. The local mayor is said to have advised them to stay away until calm was restored. Now most families have returned, but they are afraid. There have been more demonstrations and the situation is tense.
