The European Union and the Internet

US President-elect Barack Obama’s smart use of new technology, from record-breaking fundraising to Facebook widgets attracting new supporters and mass texting to keep his backers connected went a long way to show the effectiveness of the Internet. So it’s no surprise that the EU wants to make the most of this technology, too.

It has been five months since Irish voters rejected the EU reform plans to streamline EU decision-making and strengthen European institutions. Europeans are now debating how to move forward with the Lisbon Reform Treaty, and part of that discussion is happening online. The European Commission hopes to bridge the gap with EU citizens by promoting new ways for a pan-European dialogue. Alex Bakst travelled to Brussels to find out what the Internet can do for Europe.
