On the subject of: German Family Businesses

I've really liked this section of family businesses in Germany. It shows a country of people who are determined to archive their goals in what ever generation of life. I like that enthusiasm so much that if it were in my country, it wouldn't be suffering as it is now. I wish I would get the chance to learn how these businesses survive for such a long time. I would like to teach it to my country too, so that the negative attitude that we have changes about family business.

On the subject of the German DAX

  • Name: Stuart John P.
  • Country: Australia

I cannot believe how small the DAX index of companies on the German Stock Exchange or Borse is limited to 30 Companies at Frankfurt. The Australian Stock Exchange in Sydney has the ASX 100 and ASX 200 plus the All Ordinaries Index with a huge basket of companies listed in this index also. What a huge difference.

On the subject of quotas for women

  • Name: Girish P.
  • Country: USA

I happened to catch the Made in Germany episode about the lack of women in the corporate world in Germany and Europe. The subsequent discussion on quotas for women was interesting. I think the scarcity of women in senior management positions is actually a symptom of a larger European problem which is that compared to the USA, there is a distinct lack of respect for minorities, immigrants and so on in Europe. In the USA for instance, the leading woman CEO is an immigrant from India who heads Pepsi Co (Indra Nooyi). She was voted the #1 most powerful corporate woman in the USA by Forbes in 2008 . A dark skinned woman at the helm of a major Fortune 500 company is a sign of a true meritocracy and promoting a true meritocracy is the only solution to empowering women rather than forced quotas. It is unthinkable to imagine that Europe would even have a dark skinned male CEO or a black President or Prime Minister in the near future. Europe cannot hope for the emancipation of women without also addressing the other biases in its society. These cultural biases against minorities and women are at the root of the problem and no quotas can satisfactorily solve it.
