DW-AKADEMIE focuses primarily on African countries distinguished by good governance. They are countries that have made recognizable efforts to guarantee press freedom and refrain from interfering with news reporting.
These countries include Benin, Ghana, Mali, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia. They are concentrated mainly on the Indian Ocean coast of East Africa and the francophone countries of West Africa.
Wherever possible, DW-AKADEMIE supports independent stations and encourages them to report on local issues. In states where freedom of the press is limited or even non-existent, DW-AKADEMIE maintains contact with the country and intervenes where it can to provide meaningful assistance.
DW-AKADEMIE's priorities in Africa include the role of the media in conflict situations, ecology, business and health and HIV/AIDS.
